Tuesday Pre-Conference Group Discussions

As part of the 2023 WiReS Program, we are offering a number of small-group discussion opportunities to 1.) support attendees' general knowledge of the main concepts and issues highlighted in the program content and 2.) highlight big-picture conference themes and questions to consider during session programming. 

These discussion groups will be lead by industry experts and leaders who will share their knowledge and help guide the discussions.

Timing: 4pm-5pm
Location: The Conference Venue, Town & Country Resort

Terminology of Codes & Procedures - Training

Discussion/Training lead by Marcelo Hirschler, GBH International
Learn more about the acronyms and code terminology that you will hear throughout the conference! Led by one of our keynote speakers, this is the perfect discussion group for folks whom do not have a background in codes and policy language.

Comprehensive approaches for turning research into policy advancements

Discussion leader: Daniel Gorham, UL FSRI
This small group discussion will cover a variety of themes such as 1.) Research gaps - what we know and what we don't know 2.) What is still needed for home hardening research to facilitate collective impact across the state, what needs to happen? More research? More communication? More promotion efforts through community outreach? Join us to discuss this important topic in greater detail.

Existing vs. new housing and where to go from here

Discussion leaders: Steve Hawks, CAL FIRE and Steve Quarles, UC Cooperative Extension
Discussing survivability of homes, options for low & no cost retrofitting, and construction techniques.
